SER O ESTAR

Hoy es miércoles, Son las seis. SER Day, date, time Hoy es miércoles, Son las seis.

W/ nouns that define an object, tell professions Soy becario. Ella es la jefa de una compañía importante.

With de - To show ownership, where something or someone is from or made of Soy de Michigan La hoja de vida es del nuevo aspirante. Estas carpetas son de cartón reciclado.

With certain adjectives to say what something is like La nueva jefa es simpática. Sus antecedentes académicos son excelentes.

To give the location of an EVENT El concierto es en el palacio. No es en DTE.

To tell where something is. ESTAR To tell where something is. La grapadora está en el cajón.

To talk about heath and feelings Ahora estoy bien, pero ayer estuve enfermo. El becario está preocupado porque quiere trabajar en la compañía.

Ser vs. Estar - Special cases Ser is used to describe inherent traits while estar is used with adjectives to describe conditions. Using Ser or Estar will give a different shade of meaning.

The speaker considers the characteristic inherent or expected. SER ESTAR The speaker considers the characteristic inherent or expected. The speaker expresses a subjective opinion. This is often expressed in English with to look, to seem, to feel, or to taste.

Nuestro jefe está callado. SER ESTAR Nuestro jefe es callado. Our boss is quiet. (a quiet person) Nuestro jefe está callado. Our boss seems quiet. (not saying much today)

Patricia is pretty. Patricia es guapa. SER ESTAR Patricia es guapa. Patricia is pretty. ¡Vaya! ¡Qué guapa está Patricia hoy! Well, Patricia looks really nice today!

Insurance (usually) is expensive. SER ESTAR El seguro es caro. Insurance (usually) is expensive. El seguro de esta compañía está caro. That company’s insurance is surprisingly expensive.

Your son looks so tall! (He’s grown) SER ESTAR Tu hijo es alto. Your son is tall. ¡Qué alto está tu hijo! Your son looks so tall! (He’s grown)

Coffee is good. El café es bueno. The coffee (right now) is good! SER ESTAR El café es bueno. Coffee is good. El café está bueno. The coffee (right now) is good!

SER o ESTAR – meaning change! Some adjectives have a different meaning depending on whether they use ser or estar.

SER ESTAR Aburrido: boring La reunion fue aburrido. The meeting was boring. Aburrido: bored Hugo estuvo aburrido todo el dia. Hugo was bored all day.

Elisa está lista para la fiesta. SER ESTAR Listo: smart Elisa es lista. Elisa is smart Listo: ready Elisa está lista para la fiesta.

My boss is mean. My boss is sick. Mi jefe está malo. Mi jefe es malo. SER ESTAR Malo: mean Mi jefe es malo. My boss is mean. Malo: ill Mi jefe está malo. My boss is sick.

La comida aquí está rica. The food is delicious! SER ESTAR Rica: rich Nuestra becaria no es rica. Our intern isn’t rich. Rico: delicious La comida aquí está rica. The food is delicious!
