Algebra Stop Being Scared!!!

What is algebra? Algebra is the use of letters and symbols to represent values and their functions.

Expression

Expression A mathematical phrase that can contain numbers, variables, and operations.

Equation 2x + 8 = 12 5 + 5 = 10 3/x = 19 9(11) = 99

Equation Two numbers or groups of numbers that are equal. This equals that!

Variable 7X + 5

Variable The symbol for a number we don’t know yet. A value that can change.

Constant 7X + 5

Constant This is a number that stands alone without a variable attached to it.

Coefficient 7X + 5

Coefficient A number attached to a variable. The variable is multiplied by this number.

Like Terms 2x + 3x

Like Terms Numbers that have the same variables are like terms. If they share the same letter, they are like terms.

Quotient 40 ÷ 5 = 8 X ÷ Y

Quotient A quotient is the answer to a division problem.

Sum 4 + 5 = 9 X + Y

Sum A sum is the answer to an addition problem.

Difference 12 - 5 = 7 X - Y

Difference The difference is the answer to a subtraction problem.

Product (4)(5) = 20 A  Y

Product The product is the answer to a multiplication problem.

Distributive Property

Distributive Property The Distributive Property of Multiplication is the property that states that multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products.

Inequality

Inequality A mathematical statement where an inequality symbol is used.
