6.1 | Quick Reads

STEP 1 – LEARN Alternative Story Formats, or Quick Reads, help tell the story in a visual and fun way. Quick Reads require less writing, but just as much research.

THE GOALS . To make every page in the yearbook interesting to as many people as possible. To include as many people as possible in a meaningful way on every spread.

QUICK READS CAN INCLUDE Fact Fact box List Top 10 Summary points Informational map Diagram Definition 5Ws & H Mini-profile Matching Quiz While some stories are best told in extended feature form, some stories are better told in an alternative format. These quick-read formats are an easy way for readers to get information without investing several minutes to read a full-length story. Consider a variety of quick read formats to convey facts, figures and feelings in a non-story style. They can be interactive formats or chronologies. They could be a series of anecdotes, descriptive paragraphs or quotes. They’re often packaged with graphics. Select the format based on the content.

STEP 3 – USE Look in magazines, newspapers and websites for examples of Quick Reads. Collect examples, using a class Pinterest Board for examples from the internet and a notebook for paper examples. Reference these ideas as you create your spreads throughout the year.
