The Story – Chapter 6

The Story – Chapter 6

In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out; 37 but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out—until the day it lifted. 38 So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels… (Ex 40:36-38 ) On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle of the covenant law. 12 Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran. 13 They set out, this first time, at the Lord’s command through Moses… (Numbers 10:11-13 )

The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the Lord fills the whole earth, 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it. 24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land… 25 Since the Amalekites and the Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea. (Numbers 14:20-25 )

The Story – Chapter 6

These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us… Therefore , be careful if you think you are standing firm (1 Cor 10:11-12) The Story – Chapter 6

The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, “If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!” (Num 11:4-6)

The Voice of Society Around Us The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, “If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”… Moses heard the people of every family wailing at the entrance to their tents. The Lord became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. (Num 11:4-6,10)

The Voice of Society Around Us While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the Lord’s anger burned against them. (Num 25:1-3)

In this wilderness your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected. But as for you, your bodies will fall in this wilderness. (Num 14:29-31) The LORD's anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone. (Num 32:13)

The Voice of Our Family History They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!” (Num 21:4-5)

The Lord said to Moses, “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites… They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and... the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there… Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. (Num 13:1-2,27-32)

The Voice of Our Peers They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and… the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large… We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report (Num 13:27-32)

The Voice of Our Peers They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and… the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large… We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report (Num 13:27-32) Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh said… “Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid… the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.” But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. (Num 14:6-10)

The Voice of Our Peers And they spread among the Israelites a bad report (Num 13:32) The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. (Prov 12:26) Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” (1 Cor 15:33)

But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land (Num 14:24 ) Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. (Num 14:34) So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit and lay your hand on him. (Num 27:18)

The Voice of God’s Word The Lord said to Moses, “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites.” (Num 13:1-2) “Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.” (Num 14:8-9)

The Voice of God’s Word and God’s Presence When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent. 11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent. (Ex 33:10-11) “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit (Num 27:18)

The Word of God and the Presence of God Be Aware of the Power of the Voices of Society Around Us Family Before Us Peers Among Us Give Power to the Voices of The Word of God and the Presence of God Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life Deut 30:19-20

Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it… Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life (Deut 30:11-14, 19-20)
