Basic Concepts HPR 450 Chapter 1

Chapter Purpose TR accomplishes goals through CTRSs who are helping professionals who serve clients CTRSs have theoretical and technical knowledge This class and textbook focus on the how of TR (Theory and Helping Skills) Focuses on the practice of TR How do you perceive “helping others?” What is theoretical and what is technical?

Helping Others CTRSs require knowledge of processes and techniques which drive the delivery of direct client treatment and services We meet problems or needs that clients cannot meet alone Trained practitioners that base treatment delivery on theoretical, scientific, and experiential knowledge of the profession This class and book provide professional information to assist students to develop for their career and gain competencies to deliver service

Chapter Purposes Basic Concepts – we just covered that Theories and Therapies – Professionals draw on Theory as a basis for action – we’ll study the theories Facilitation Techniques – Interventions – Some are proven by evidence-based practice and some are not TR Process – Systematic method of problem-solving in TR – Using the APIE Process can bring about change in client Helping Others – TR involves interpersonal relationships – CTRSs must understand human behavior and what constitutes an effective helper and helping relationships – Boundaries must be observed

Chapter Purposes cont’d Communication Skills – Interpersonal relationships are based on communication – 2-way sharing of thoughts, ideas and experiences – Essential in relating to clients in professional practice Leadership is critical!!! – CTRSs lead clients individually and in groups during therapeutic interventions and in facilitating client growth Specific Leadership Tasks – Individual client documentation, incident reports, teaching/learning principles, motivation, teamwork, advocacy, ICF, understanding transactions with and between clients

Chapter Purpose cont’d Clinical Supervision – Cooperative process between a supervisor and an individual who has direct responsibility for carrying out the clinical program with clients – Supervisor assists in improving clinical abilities and competencies to reach goals of the clinical program Health and Safety Considerations – Theory is basis for clinical practice but CTRSs must possess technical skills – first aid, safety for specific populations, proper use of mechanical aids, transfer procedures, assistive techniques, drug effects and contraindications
