How would you feel if your classroom looked like this? ©VotesForSchools2018 Starter: What makes a school? The answer is that all these things make your school the happy, safe and exciting place it is. We’re lucky to live in a country where schools have wonderful things like classroom decoration, iPads and of course, your teacher! Other countries are not so lucky. Today we will learn about a war in a country called Yemen. The fighting has meant many schools are unsafe or badly damaged, like this one on the left. How does war change children’s lives? ©VotesForSchools2018 How does war change children’s lives? Dangerous: Not safe, able to cause harm. When there is war, food doesn’t get delivered because its dangerous to travel. Lots of farm land and buildings are also damaged, which can make it hard to grow food. People can get sick more easily, because the drinking water is not clean. War makes life very difficult and dangerous for children. How does war change children’s lives? ©VotesForSchools2018 How does war change children’s lives? School isn’t just a place where you learn to read and write – it’s also a place where you make friends, have fun and learn to work with other people. When children in Yemen don’t have a school to go to, their lives change in many ways. Next week In Year 6 In college! I would start to miss my friends. I’d forget how to count I wouldn’t be able to go to university Group task (6 min) On your table, write down what you would be missing at these three times if you didn’t have a school to go to. How does war change children’s lives? ©VotesForSchools2018 How does war change children’s lives? I think being able to go to the doctor is more important than having a school. Is school the most important thing during a war? No There are lots of other important things to think about during a war, like medicine and food. Schools cost a lot of money to run. There could be cheaper ways to help more children. It is sometimes dangerous to travel to school when there is a war on. Image Source 1- Reference ©VotesForSchools2018
