1 PP Lessons Term 4, 2016 Week 8

2 Practising our ABCs and the DE.
WALT: Practise using the ABC model and learn about the D and E WILF: I can use the ABC model to recognise my thoughts about situations. I can become a detective about my feelings and find ways to have more helpful thoughts I can recognise that my efforts will affect how I feel about adversity. Slide 2 Read WALT and WILF

3 What is ABC? A – Is the adversity or negative event that takes place.
B – the beliefs and interpretations about the event/adversity (self talk) C – is the consequences and how you feel and behave following the adversity. Using the ABC model helps us to try and look on the bright side in any situation. This will help us cope with any adversity we may face. Slide 3 Read what ABC is. Emphasise that the Consequences are a result of the beliefs NOT the adversity

4 What is D? D – Detective is finding ways to STOP negative inner thoughts (unhelpful thoughts). This helps us to think differently about the adversity. Then we can move on from adversity quicker and have a more positive consequence. Some ways to change our pessimistic thoughts: - Visualise a stop sign - Think “Is this really that bad?” What evidence is there that things will be bad? Think “Is it worth worrying about all day?” Think “Can I think about this later?” Write down your worries to think about them later. Slide 4 Read and discuss D – Detective is using ideas that STOP negative inner thoughts (unhelpful thoughts). This helps us to move on from adversity quicker and have more positive consequences. Some examples are: - Visualise a stop sign - Think “ Is this really that bad?” Think “ Is it worth worrying about all day?” Think “Can I think about this later?” Write down your worries to think about them later.

5 Practise being a detective
A - You are starting your first day at a new school B – “I won’t make any friends” “I won’t have anyone to talk to at recess or lunch” “I will be lonely” (pessimistic/unhelpful thoughts) C – “I feel sad, helpless, lonely and don’t look friendly.” D – Visualise a stop sign and think… “The teacher will buddy me up with someone” “I have a friendly face so people will want to be my friend” “I am excited to make new friends, so I am going to try and smile a lot.” “Being upset and worried won’t let people see the real me” Slide 5 Read and discuss A - You are starting your first day at a new school B – “I won’t make any friends” “ I won’t have anyone to talk to at recess or lunch” “ I will be lonely” C – “I will feel sad, helpless, lonely and probably won’t look friendly.” D – Visualise a stop sign and think… “The teacher will buddy me up with someone” “ I have a friendly face so people will want to be my friend” “I am excited to make new friends, so I am going to try and smile a lot.” “ Being upset and worried won’t let people see the real me.”

6 Using your detective skills
A – Finding school work hard B – I am too dumb to do this (pessimistic/unhelpful thought) C – Gives up on work and avoids doing it. D – Ask: Is this going to help me get better? Can I ask the teacher to explain it again? Should I really just give up on this after one attempt? I could do another thing like this yesterday, so I can do this too if I try. Think of some other questions you could ask yourself? Slide 6 Read: A – Finding school work hard B – I am too dumb to do this C – Gives up on work and avoids doing it. D – Ask the students Is this going to help me get better? Can I ask the teacher to explain it again? Should I really just give up on this after one attempt? Ask: Think of some other questions you could ask yourself?

7 What is E? E – Energizer, which means that you are challenging your thoughts and questioning how they are helping you. This lets you think about how you feel now, after looking at helpful and unhelpful beliefs. Reflecting on how you have used positive self talk makes us feel good. For example I will ask someone else if I can play with them I will keep trying to get better at maths I will try another sport next term Using your energizer means that you never give up and makes you feel good. Slide 7 Read and discuss E – Energizer, which means that you are challenging your thoughts and questioning how they are helping you. This lets you think about how you feel now, after looking at helpful and unhelpful beliefs. For example: I will ask someone else if I can play with them I will keep trying to get better at maths I will try another sport next term Using your energizer means that you never give up.

8 Using your ABCDE Look at each picture to identify the Adversity, Belief, and Consequence. Think about your beliefs (self talk) and become a detective. Detective- Ask yourself if the thoughts are helping? Energizer- How do you feel after you have thought about your beliefs? Slide 8 Discuss images first and complete one as a whole class using your ABCDE. Students can then work by themselves or in pairs to complete the 2 remaining pictures.

9 Using your Energizer vAOmV1o&list=PLHHEA32K9gqtp7tpoB_0TmzlYodOCpT87 Slide 9 Watch the video After watching the video, connect the animation to your ABC For Adversity- The cookies are out of reach For Belief- If I keep trying hard, I will get them. I am clever and I have lots of ideas For Consequence- Ornie gets the cookies Ornie didn’t need to be a detective as he was optimistic in the beginning. Sometimes we are not always so optimistic in the beginning. Rethink the ABCDE Model as if Ornie was a pessimistic thinker. For Belief- I can’t reach them. This always happens to me. It’s because I am so short. I won’t ever be able to get them. For Consequence- He doesn’t even try and feels sad and hopeless. For Detective – Ornie finds ways to think about the situation differently New Beliefs - Last week I was able to think of a way to reach some cakes, so this doesn’t happen to me all the time. I can try that idea or think of others. I am smart and I don’t give up. Even though I am short I can use things to make myself taller. New Consequence: He finds a way to get the cookies Thinks of many ideas to get the cookies For Energizer- He never gave up

10 Today we have looked at:
Looked at the ABC Learnt about D and E Practised thinking like a detective to use more positive self talk Reflected on how our feelings can change, after challenging our thoughts. Slide 10 Read: Looked at the ABC Learnt about D and E Practiced thinking like a detective Reflected on how your feelings can change, after challenging your thoughts.
