Ensure Your Students Hit the Mark with Target Method Match for Teaching, Learning and Assessment Is Your Aim True?

Obstacles to true alignment: Initial misinterpretation of the goal/ standard Misinterpretation or change in the intent of the standard when translated into a learning target. Misinterpretation of standard or learning target when planning learning activities. Modifications of learning activities causing misalignment. Misinterpretation by students about purpose of learning activities. Misalignment of measure to standards and learning targets.

Seeing your target clearly: CASL pg. 62-63: Deconstruction of standards into learning targets. *This blank template is on your CASL CDs and Cas’s website. CASL Learning target resources: CASL pg. 44-60 – Types of learning targets defined with examples CASL pg. 69-81 How to convert your learning targets into student- centered & parent-friendly language. .

Taking Aim: What is it we want students to accomplish Taking Aim: What is it we want students to accomplish? How will we know if they do? ASSESSMENT CASL pg. 24-25 Assessment of and Assessment for Learning Who is using the information and how is it being used? Target-Method Match helps ensure your assessment is measuring what you think it measures. What type of target needs what type of question/ assessment item. CASL pg. 94 *Creating the study guide at the same time or modeled after the assessment helps you to keep student aim true.

Take your shot: Lesson planning, implementation, learning…notice this all happens after designing the assessment. Be sure your instructional activities are focused on the learning targets you have created (which are tightly aligned with the standard, and accurately assessed with your assessment tool.) This includes practice that looks like the assessment. Communicate the learning targets to students in a variety of ways. Using your tightly aligned study guide is like rails to keep students on track towards the target destination.

Objective 1: Analyze and revise, as needed, the alignment of your next unit’s standards deconstruction and learning targets. Objective 2: Target-Method Match your learning targets.
