1 CCSS Training 9/24/14

2 CCSS is not Smarter Balanced
more important are the classroom assessments you are doing

3 Keys to Quality Assessment
Clear Purpose Clear Targets Sound Design Effective Communication Student Involvement

4 Key 1 - Clear Purpose Who is going to use the information?
How will they use it? What information, in what detail, do they need?

5 Clear Learning Target Writing it on the board, telling students the target is not enough. Learning target should be discussed as a class, students should understand the “why.” broken down restated in student friendly language

6 Why Clear Targets? Teachers Students
aligned, accurate assessments and lessons created instruction matches intended learning descriptive feedback for learning evaluative feedback truly reflects mastery of learning Students clarity of learning for learning targets are motivating and allow for all to be successful reflect on and assess their own learning and growth are critical to shared communication between teachers and students determine what questions to ask

7 5 Types of Learning Targets
Knowledge Targets Reasoning Targets Skill Targets Product Targets Disposition Targets

8 Knowledge Targets Reasoning Targets
factual information, procedural knowledge, conceptual understandings (identify nouns and verbs, use correct spelling) Reasoning Targets thought processes (inferences, compare & contrast, analysis, evaluation, synthesis)

9 Skill Targets Product Targets
Demonstration or physical skill-based performance (speaking & listening, technology to produce/publish, discussion, writing over an extended period of time) Product Targets creation of product is the focus of learning (writing standards)

10 Be clear what you are assessing
Teachers often combine reasoning and product targets. What is your big focus for the day? Reasoning or product?

11 Deconstructing standards
If a standard is Reasoning, it has Knowledge and Reasoning targets If a standard is Skill, it has Knowledge, Reasoning, & Skill targets If a standard is Product, it has Knowledge, Reasoning, Skill & product Targets (not always skill)

12 Look at what Kentucky has done
Kentucky has already deconstructed all Common Core Standards. Look at them, use them for a model...or change them.

13 Steps to deconstructing
choose a standard type of target? nouns, verbs in the target based on type of standard, write learning targets for all needed areas (knowledge, reasoning, etc.) write learning targets in student friendly terms

14 Why rewrite targets in student friendly language?
students can go deeper into the standard if they understand all parts of it Parents can understand the target Students have more motivation if they understand the standard Have students help you rewrite the standard

15 Key 3 - Sound Design design assessments to serve intended formative and summative purposes select assessment methods to match learning targets

16 Methods of Assessment Selected Response Written Response
Performance Assessment Personal Communication Knowledge Good Strong Partial Reasoning Skill Poor Product
