Behavior of Waves Notes 8.P.3A.3

Reflection 1) Reflection is the bouncing back of a wave when it meets a surface that does not absorb the entire wave’s energy. 2) All waves can be reflected. 3) Sound wave reflections are called echoes and are used by bats and dolphins. 4) Materials that reflect: Plane mirrors, smooth surfaces Add pictures of reflection

Refraction 1) Refraction is the bending of waves caused by a change in their speed (faster or slower) when moving from one medium to another. 2) The more the change in speed, the more the wave will bend. 3) Refraction of light through a convex lens can make images appear larger. 4) Prisms separate white light in to different components by bending the light . Add convex lens picture and prism picture with labeling light wave frequencies

Transmission 1) Transmission of waves are when waves pass through or enter another medium. 2) Sound waves move through solids, liquids, or gas. 3) Transparent material: May be clear or have color, allow most of the light that strikes it to pass through (very small amount reflected or absorbed) 4) Opaque material: allows no light waves to be transmitted 5) Translucent material: transmits some light, but most is scattered so there is no clear image

Absorption 1) Absorption of certain frequencies of light occurs when the energy is not transferred through, or reflected by, the given medium. 2) Objects that absorb electromagnetic radiation become warmer and convert it to infrared radiation
