Properties of Love 1 Corinthians 13:4 “Love does not envy, does not parade itself, is not puffed up.”
Love does not envy “Zealos” – boil over (ill-will over one’s joy) Envy cancels good (Jas 3:14-16). All evil stems from envy: Satan, Cain, Jacob, Joseph’s brothers, Jewish leaders. Free of envy: Jonathan (1 Sam 18:1), Paul (Phil 1:15-18), Jesus (John 8:50; 5:41). We envy because of selfishness & a lack of trust in our Father.
Love does not parade itself boast Love does not parade itself Love will not allow us to gloat. All we have was given to us (1 Cor 4:7). Love is modest (2 Cor 5:14). Sinners boast (Psa 94:4). Our boast is in the Lord (Psa 34:2; 44:8).
arrogant Love is not puffed up Overbearing superiority or self-importance. The Corinthians were “puffed up”: Association w/ preachers (1 Cor 3:4; 4:6). Tolerance of sin (1 Cor 5:1-2). Spiritual gifts (1 Cor 12:14-21). Knowledge (1 Cor 8:1).
arrogant Love is not puffed up Arrogance & wisdom cannot coexist (Prov 8:13; Jas 4:6). Arrogance is self-defeating (Luke 14:11; Prov 11:2; 29:23). God’s honor goes to the humble: Jesus (Phil 2:6-10), kingdom citizens (Matt 23:11; Luke 18:17; Matt 18:3-4; 1 Pet 5:5-6; Phil 2:3-5).
Love will conquer envy, boasting & arrogance
