Corby Steelworks – Visions & Echoes of the Past Corby Steelworks Resource provided by

Corby Steelworks – Visions & Echoes of the Past Iron ore has been mined and worked in the Corby area since Roman times. The building of the railways in the 1800s led to the development of an ironstone industry and by 1910 an ironstone works had been established. In the 1920s the ironstone works were taken over by the steel firm Stewarts and Lloyds, who decided to build a large integrated ironstone and steel works on the site. Construction of the steelworks began in 1934 and the first furnace was lit in May. The first steel was produced in October 1935 and for decades afterwards the steel works dominated the town. In 1967 the British steel industry was nationalised and the steel and tube works at Corby became part of British Steel. In the 1970s a plan was agreed that would lead to the phasing-out of steel making in Corby and in November 1979 the end of iron and steel making in Corby was announced. By the end of 1981 over 5,000 jobs had been lost but steel tube making continued. The steelworks was quickly demolished and redeveloped with shops (such as ASDA) and new businesses being built on the site. Resource provided by
