Romeo and Juliet Act III-V Test Review Test Date: Thursday, April 8

Literary Terms “Immoderately she weeps for Tybalt’s death, and therefore I have little talked of love, for Venus smiles not in a house of tears.” ALLUSION As the household prepares for Juliet’s wedding, she prepares for her “death”. DRAMATIC IRONY Romeo says, “Thus with a kiss I die.” CLIMAX The deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt. TURNING POINT The Nurse changes in her beliefs/ideas about Juliet’s marriage to Romeo (type of character) DYNAMIC

Literary Terms Juliet delivers a long speech about her marriage while she waits alone on their wedding night. SOLILOQUY Mercutio says, “Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man.” PUN Lord Capulet says, “Death lies on her like an untimely frost…” PERSONIFICATION/ Simile Romeo says, “Thus with a kiss I die.” CLIMAX Capulet’s tomb, Balthasar tells the audience that he suspects Romeo’s intentions. ASIDE

Literary Terms Juliet is angry when she first learns that Romeo has killed Tybalt, saying “Fiend angelical …dove feathered rave …honorable villain.” OXYMORONS  Lord Capulet describes Juliet as a “tempest-tossed boat.” Her tears are compared to the salt water of the sea, her body to a boat, etc. CONCEIT At the end of the play, Romeo and Juliet still love each other. Their love, despite causing death, has dissolved the hatred between the two families. A universal idea such as this one (that love conquers all) is called a… THEME “I pray the, good Mercutio, let’s retire. The day is hot, the Capels are abroad, and if we met, we shall not ‘scape a brawl.” FORESHADOWING

Tybalt would kill thee? FRIAR “More light and light. More dark and dark our woes.” ROMEO “I think it best you married with the county.”

If all else fail, my self have power to die.” JULIET “My heart is wondrous light since this same wayward girl is so reclaimed.” LORD CAPULET “My poverty, but not my will, consents.” APOTHECARY “I do not want to hear all your begging and pleading. I intend to take you into custody as the criminal you are.” PARIS “Here’s to my love. O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick! Thus with a kiss I die.” ROMEO

Who Said It? “Drunk all and left no friendly drop to help me after?... Thy lips are warm… Oh happy dagger!” JULIET “For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” PRINCE “Why the devil came you between us! I was hurt under your arm." MERCUTIO “Death lies on her like an untimely frost upon the sweetest flower of all the field.” LORD CAPULET “I will be brief, for my short date of breath is not so long as is a tedious tale.” FRIAR

What Happened? What does Friar Laurence suggest to Juliet that she do to avoid marrying Paris? She needs to drink a sleeping potion. What does she tell the nurse to tell her mother when she leaves for Friar Laurence’s cell? She is going to confession (shrift) Why does Lord Capulet decide that Juliet is ready to marry Paris right away instead of waiting for two more years? Her grief for Tybalt’s death is overwhelming. What causes Romeo to kill Tybalt, his new wife’s cousin? To get even for Mercutio’s death What is the Prince’s sentence for this? Romeo is banished from Verona. How does Romeo react to this sentence? He is grief stricken.

What Happened? How does Friar Laurence plan for Romeo to hear of Juliet’s staged death? He writes a letter to Romeo, and it is to be delivered by Friar John Where does Romeo go to hide after killing Tybalt? Friar Laurence’s cell is where Romeo goes to hide. What Happened? Once Juliet tells her father she has changed her mind about the marriage, what action does her father take regarding the marriage?
