Gary and Debby March 16, 2011

To present the basic and simple concepts of gardening in the shade To give you a list of common, reasonably priced, and easy to acquire plants for our area To reinforce the Design Principles acquired in the Master Gardener Program

Unique Full shade lasts all day Woodland terrain Apply the Design Principles Right plant for the right place Dependent upon good soil preparation Very organic Decaying leaves, etc.

Your interest must be in the natural woodland forest Trees Soil conditions Natural terrain Foliage Cannot change these Must work with them No manmade lines

Natural flow of the terrain Planting around the structures and trees Repetition Beauty in simplicity, subtlety Harmony achieved through color/variegation, form and texture Accent can be powerful Scale upset by trees

Deer resistant means that deer are less likely to eat it, due to its aroma, medicinal taste, or texture. Only plastic plants and a few cacti are truly deer proof. Sandys Plants Catalog. Common and accessible shade plants for our area Deer resistant shade plants for our area

Complex More dependent on the terrain and foliage than is sun gardening Can be an extremely creative and personal expression Pulls you back to nature Using the Design Principles-to design around what you have
