1 Do YOU know your adaptations?!

2 What type of adaptation is this?

3 Plant adaptations Dormancy
Plants also have something similar to behavioural adaptations They are called responses What might a plant do in the winter time? Dormancy This is when something stops growing Most plants stop growing in the winter Fall? Plants lose their leaves and grow new ones in spring WHY? Save water because they won’t lose any from their leaves over the winter  can stay alive What about plants that die in the winter? Have seeds that will survive and grow into new plants in the spring!

4 Five Features of habitats
What are the five features (categories) that we use for habitats? Amount of Light Amount of Water Temperature Type of Food Type of Shelter

5 Boreal forest On the northern part of British Columbia
Winter is long and cold Summer is warm but very short. There are both wet and dry types of soil and different trees that like each soil Many ponds and lakes Moose Eat plants that grow near and under water Ducks Live on the ponds and lakes Black Spruce Tree Food for many birds and also deer

6

7 Desert habitats Usually sunny and dry Sandy soil
Hot during the day, cold during the night Only a few trees But there are shrubs, patches of grass and small cacti (cactus) The roots and leaves of these plants help them live in the heat The plants give animals shelter from the Sun, and also food and nesting sites

8 animals Great Basin pocket mouse It likes to burrow in the sandy soil
It stores and eats the seeds of the antelope brush shrub

9

10 Temperate rain forest Temperate Means not too hot and not too cold
On the coast of British Columbia Lots of rain, mist and fog Temperate Means not too hot and not too cold Lots of moisture and has a cool temperature This is good for plant growth Many plants give shade to the stream This makes the water cold It is the perfect habitat for salmon! In the fall, they lay their eggs. The plants also help the fish by hiding their eggs from eagles
