A demonstration of how to apply the lenses to any exhibit you experience. The Paper Bag Princess story by Robert Munsch & art by Michael Martchenko

Feminist & Marxist Lens A beautiful princess named Elizabeth was going to marry a handsome prince named Ronald.

Feminist & Marxist Lens But a dragon came and burnt up her castle, burnt up her clothes, and carried off Prince Ronald.

Feminist & Marxist Lens Elizabeth put on a paper bag that wasnt burnt and followed the dragon to his cave.

Feminist & Marxist Lens When she knocked, the dragon said, Go away! I will eat you tomorrow.

Feminist & Marxist Lens Wait! Wait! Elizabeth said. Are you a fierce dragon ? Oh yes! said the dragon.

Feminist & Marxist Lens Can you burn up a forest? said Elizabeth. The dragon took a deep breath and burnt up fifty forests. R H H H H H H H H H H H A A A H H H H H !

Feminist & Marxist Lens Can you burn up a hundred forests? said Elizabeth. The dragon tried: RHHHHHHHAAAHHHHH! But he had no fire left.

Feminist & Marxist Lens I bet you could fly around the whole world really fast, said Elizabeth. The dragon went around the world in five seconds.

Feminist & Marxist Lens Wow! Do it again, said Elizabeth. The dragon went around the whole world, crashed and fell down, and went to sleep. Z z z z z z z z z

Feminist & Marxist Lens Elizabeth shouted, Hey, dragon ! z z z z z z Z Z Z He didnt wake up.

Feminist & Marxist Lens Ronald came out and said, ELIZABETH! You are a mess. You have no shoes! You are wearing a paper bag. Come back and rescue me when you are dressed like a REAL PRINCESS.

Feminist & Marxist Lens Elizabeth said, RONALD! Your hair is nice. You look like a PRINCE. But you are a BUM. They didnt get married after all.

Critical/Theoretical Analysis Why does Ronald have a tennis racket? Why are they named Ronald and Elizabeth? Why a paper bag and not a ___________? Is the dragon ogling Elizabeth lustfully? Who are the intended purchasers? Who are the intended readers? Which stories are rejected by this tale?

I Know a Rhino by Charles Fuge This is a psychologically-oppressed little girl who has both parents at home, is middle class,. This book reflects her desires for: Danger, adventure, exploration, independence Wealth, power, admiration, social status Tea, tennis, tuxedo, and doctor life. This is a family who seeks a rise in social class. Blue collar/farming tendency? Is this a desire to retain family heritage and a connection to past ways of agrarian life in America?

Princess Smartypants by Babette Cole This princess is described as pretty but does not fit our usual standards of beautymaybe the authors point is that she is beautiful on the inside. Her mother, the queen, commands her to replicate the queens life. What do wearing overalls and hanging laundry on a line say about her? Princess Smartypants lies, sort of. She says the winner will win her hand. Prince Swashbuckle completes all the challenges, but Smartypants rewards him with her hand on his cheekalong with a magical kiss that turn him into a warty toad. Is she a lesbian? What is this books message to little girls?
