Burroughs Wellcome Physician Scientist Institutional(BPSI) Fatima AbdelSalam Research Program Manager University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine

Burroughs Wellcome Physician Scientist Institutional Award   Due April 3, 2018; 2.5M   Increase number MDs-only in research careers   Commitment to diversity and inclusion   How will the institution support the program   How measure outcomes and use to refine the program   Scalable as model for other institutions

The problem  Talent gap in biomedical research given that fewer than 1 in 200 MD’s are NIH grant-holders.  Little is known about designing and implementing best practices for recruitment, success and retention of physician scientists in laboratory-based research careers.  This proposal focuses on medical student through fellow stages.

Become physician scientist

Opportunities for Intervention BarriersFacilitators Loss of momentum (student to residency to fellowship; inadequate protected time) Research support during residency, fellowship, research tracks, REACH curriculum Longitudinal track Instructive videos on overcoming obstacles, IDPs Technical/Scientific support Loss of motivation (clinical- research-life balance; daunting funding picture, confidence undermined) Strong mentor pool, successful role models Coaching, resilience training Time banking Hard to build depth of scientific knowledge and skills T32, K12 programs, networking guidance, ICRE, OACD, mentors, rich NIH environment, 150 Centers/Institutes Transactional skill building Mentor matching Technique training and content area resources

Recruitment and retention videos Career instructive physician scientist Different disciplines, levels, problems identified and overcome – Distinct instructional goal/profile The biggest obstacle I encountered was … Who I am What I am researching at the SOM Why I am excited about being a physician scientist Here are the steps that I took to address this obstacle (in detail) This is how I succeeded
