These fractions represent part of a whole object. Proper Fractions In a proper fraction, the numerator is smaller than the denominator. Example: 3 5 These fractions represent part of a whole object.

These fractions represent one whole or greater than one whole. Improper Fractions In an improper fraction, the numerator is greater than (or equal to) the denominator. Example: 7 7 4 7 or These fractions represent one whole or greater than one whole.

You can use either a mixed number or an improper fraction to show the same amount. How much pizza is pictured below? We can write this amount as a mixed number: 3 4 1 3 4 1 whole and

Sometimes the sum of two mixed numbers will contain improper fractions that must be converted to proper fractions 2 ⅖ + 3 ⅘ = Add the whole numbers, then add the fractions. 2+3 = 5 ⅖ + ⅘ = 6/5 5 6/5 is not the way to write this answer! Write the improper fraction as a mixed number 6/5 = 1 ⅕ Then add the whole number and your new mixed number. 5 + 1 ⅕ = 6 ⅕

You can use improper fractions to subtract mixed numbers 5 ⅕ - 2 ⅘ = Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction. 26/5 - 14/5 = 12/5 2. Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number. 12/5 = 2 ⅖
