Paragraph writing Language Arts

What is a paragraph? A paragraph is an organized block of sentences that develops one part of a piece of writing. A well-developed paragraph consists of an introductory sentence, two or more supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence.

Introductory Sentence Paragraph structure Concluding Sentence This sentence refers to the topic and sums up the main idea of the paragraph. Supporting Sentence This sentence gives specific details relating to the main idea or topic (i.e. examples, facts). The more supporting sentences there are, the more specific the details become. Introductory Sentence This sentence tells the reader the main idea, or what the paragraph is about.

Types of paragraphs Expository: An expository paragraph explains something or provides instruction. It could also describe a process and move the reader step by step through a method. *Add definitions

Types of paragraphs Persuasive: A persuasive paragraph tells the writer’s opinion about a topic. It tries to get the reader to agree with the writer’s point of view. *Add definitions

Rules of writing Indent the first sentence. Do not begin a sentence with “and”, “but”, or “because”. Write a complete thought, and put a period after it. Always reread your work to ensure proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
