Eionet NRC Information Systems Workshop Standards and Interoperability 27 - 28 November 2008

Scope of the workshop To discuss the needs and use of open standards for current and future Eionet dataflows To inform Eionet about OGC and EEA’s membership To share experiences with open standards and interoperability To discuss potential role of EEA/Eionet in the standardisation process Context: SEIS - Shared Environmental Information System INSPIRE – European Spatial Data Infrastructure GMES – Global Monitoring for Environment and Security EEA new strategy 2009-2013

Scope of SEIS improve modernise streamline connect environmental information systems

Evolution of environmental data and information flows Snail mail Fax Tapes CD-ROM Floppy disks Email with attachments Web-based data sharing First few years, no technical infrastructure in place Requests and deliveries were sent by post on paper and copied for distribtuion These working methods were replaced by e-mail. To begin with there were many problems with file formats Data deliveries were put in data bases, mostly maintained by the ETCs For the past few years, data have been delivered from most countries directly into the central data repository of Reportnet where they can be retrieved by many users 80‘s 90‘s 21st century Paper based reporting >> Electronic data reporting

Evolution of the demand for environmental information Acquis Env./Sector Policy 6th Env. Action Plan - Sustainable Developement Strategy 1970s 2020 Compliance assessments Indicator assessments Integrated assessments
