6.6 – NOTES Naming Ionic Compounds
3. Naming ionic compounds a. Monatomic cations are known by their name. For example, Na+ is sodium. b. Monatomic anions have the ending “ide,” which means negative. For example, O-2 is known as oxide. Polyatomic ions have their normal names. c. Cations with more than one oxidation state: the oxidation state must be specified.
Traditional naming: makes use of Latin name; uses suffix –ic for higher oxidation state and –ous for lower oxidation state of the metal Stock system: this is one to know; makes use of English name; uses Roman numerals to denote the oxidation state
Examples: RbNO2 rubidium nitrite CuSO4 cupric sulfate copper (II) sulfate
Fe(HSO4)2 ferrous bisulfate iron (II) bisulfate (NH4)3PO4 ammonium phosphate
Al2(SO3)3 aluminum sulfite Pb(CO3)2 lead (IV) carbonate Plumbic carbonate
FeCl3 ferric chloride iron (III) chloride SnI4 stannic iodide tin (IV) iodide
