1 CaCl2 = calcium chloride
Naming Compounds Binary Ionic Compounds – consist of only 2 different elements, a metal and nonmetal 1. cation (metal) first, then anion (nonmetal) 2. metal = name of the element Ca2+ = calcium ion 3. nonmetal = root + -ide Cl = chloride CaCl2 = calcium chloride

4 Naming when you know the metal’s charge:  metal is group 1, group 2, or Al3+, Zn2+, Ag  no Roman numerals (plain style) K2O = potassium oxide NOT potassium (I) oxide

5 PbCl2 = lead (II) chloride
Naming when you don’t know the metals charge from periodic table: Roman Numeral Style  metal can have different charges, it depends on the compound  use Roman numeral in name PbCl2 Pb2+ is cation PbCl2 = lead (II) chloride

6 Figure 2.22: The common cations and anions

9 P2O5 = diphosphorus pentoxide
Naming for covalent compounds:  Compounds between two nonmetals  Use prefixes: 1 = mono 2 = di 3 = tri 4 = tetra 5 = penta 6 = hexa  Never use mono- with the first element P2O5 = diphosphorus pentoxide CO = carbon monoxide
