Textbook scavenger hunt Please turn in your book to pg. xxxii Complete the scavenger hunt on how to use your textbook…this will be useful as the year progresses

Identifying main idea and details The main idea is the central thought It is general and conveys the key concept The details are facts that support the main idea Details include the who, what, when, where, why, and how Details also include facts, statistics, examples, explanations, and descriptions

Main idea and details example Pg. H5 in your text Read the 3 paragraphs in the middle entitled Life in Colonial America Answer the three questions at the bottom of the page

Summarizing Is the process of condensing what you read into a briefer, easier to understand format. A good summary includes the main idea and the most important supporting details retold in your own words

Summarizing Read the summary on pg. H6 and answer the three questions at the bottom of the page

Making inferences Inferences are implied ideas drawn from the details in the reading Inferring requires using clues in the text to connect implied ideas with stated facts and your own common sense.

Making inferences Read the paragraphs in the middle of pg. H7 Then answer the following questions- From a national perspective, what was troubling about Lincoln’s election in 1860? What can you infer about the effect of Lincoln’s election on the future of the South? Using the reading and your prior knowledge, explain the effect that multiple candidates can have on a general election?

Identifying cause and effect By using cause and effect, you can determine why certain events occurred and if events are related A cause is an action that makes another event happen An effect is something that happens as a result of a cause

Cause and Effect Read the two paragraphs on pg. H9 Then answer the 3 questions: Why did the Russian army begin to mobilize for war? What was the effect of Russia’s mobilization? List an effect of Germany’s decision to invade the neutral country of Belgium.

Compare and Contrast Comparing involves looking at both the similarities and differences between two or more people, places, or events Contrasting means examining only the differences
