1 Essential Question: Big Idea: Finding Courage
Lesson 6 - determine cause and effect I can determine cause and effect relationships by analyzing the decisions of historical figures and the aftermath of their decisions. Essential Question: RI.5.5 Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts. How does understanding the relationships among individuals and historical events help readers understand text?

2 I can determine cause and effect relationships by analyzing the decisions of historical figures and the aftermath of their decisions. How will my teacher
assess my understanding? Based on: my own self-assessment turn and talk discussions answers to HOT questions independent practice How will my learning be
assessed? -by my ability to identify cause and effect based on the decisions made and the consequences of those decisions. RI.5.5 Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts. Today we will be reading Real-Life Superheroes (p.22-24)

3 (Where might you have heard this word before in a different context?)
Use context clues to help you figure out the meaning of the words below: convince, pg 22 campaign, pg 23 Starting in October 1944, the Nazis increased their campaign against the Jews. (Where might you have heard this word before in a different context?) Amazingly, he managed to convince the German and Hungarian authorities that these passes were official legal documents. CCSS.RL.5.4 Determine the meaning of and use academic and domain-specific words in a text.

4 I can clearly respond to discussion questions by providing multiple examples and evidence from a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. What strategies did Raoul Wallenberg use to save people's lives? 2. What details support the idea that the German and Hungarian authorities didn't know Raoul's job was to save the Jews? 3. What kind of words would you use to describe Raoul? What makes him different from the other "superheroes" we've read about? 4. What are some of the lasting effects of Raoul's life?

5 I can strongly convey my opinion on a topic by adding related/relevant text evidence for support.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Team Talk: Do you think the text did an effective job of sharing about the life of Raoul? What could have been added or taken away to improve the text? Use evidence from the text and your own background knowledge to support your ideas about answering the question.

6 What does it say about Raoul if people named a park after him?
Connection I can determine cause and effect relationships by analyzing the decisions of historical figures and the aftermath of their decisions. Sometimes people's determination and heroic actions don't go unnoticed. The actions of these people have been so life-changing that they are memorialized through a monument or a park named in their honor. Check out the picture. What does it say about Raoul if people named a park after him? What is the message of the historian that relates to the main idea of the book? click on the picture to watch a video
of a short history on Wallenberg

7 Think: Can a cause make more than one effect?
I can determine cause and effect relationships by analyzing the decisions of historical figures and the aftermath of their decisions. Teach/Reference: Cause and effect relationships is a type of text structure that authors will use to show how events happened or what made them happen. Sometimes, one event will lead into another, causing a "chain of events." This strategy can support the point the author is trying to make about the effects of the efforts of all of these "superheroes. Think: Can a cause make more than one effect? Can something happen from more than one cause?

8 I do: I can determine cause and effect relationships by analyzing the decisions of historical figures and the aftermath of their decisions. Re-read page 22: What caused the German and Hungarian authorities to believe Jews were under the protection of the Swedish government? What is an effect of Raoul building safe houses? Ways to determine the effect:
What is an effect of______?
What happened because of _______? Ways to determine the cause: What caused _____?
What made ______ happen?
Cause Effect The reason something happened. The result of what happened. Why? The German and Hungarian authorities believed the Jews were under the protection of the Swedish government. 1. 2. because Raoul created special passes that looked official 3. 2. What happened because of this? ? 3. Raoul built safe houses. 1. Tens of thousands of Jews attended schools, hospitals, and got food at kitchens, and felt safe.

9 Cause Effect We do: self-assess Re-read page 23:
I can determine cause and effect relationships by analyzing the decisions of historical figures and the aftermath of their decisions. Re-read page 23: Find two cause-effect relationships from the two paragraphs: Think - what leads into the other?
How does one event make another event happen? Ways to determine the effect:
What is an effect of______?
What happened because of _______? Ways to determine the cause: What caused _____?
What made ______ happen?
MISCONCEPTION: Cause and Effect is NOT the same as a
Timeline!
A timeline tells the events in order, like on page 18.
Cause and effect show a relationship
between two events of how they lead into the other. Cause Effect The reason something happened. The result of what happened.

10 Novice/Apprentice: Practitioner: Expert:
I can determine cause and effect relationships by analyzing the decisions of historical figures and the aftermath of their decisions. Readers, as you read you can work on your own personal goal or any
other skill that we've previously worked on. Novice/Apprentice: Practitioner: With a teacher, determine the cause/effect relationships on pages Read your own non-fiction text and determine cause/effect relationships. Determine the cause/effect relationships on pages Share your ideas with a partner. Continue reading your independent non-fiction text and determine cause/effect relationships. Expert: Read any previous pages in the text and determine the cause/effect relationships. Why do you think that authors use the cause/effect text structure when writing text?

11 WRAP UP! I can determine cause and effect relationships by analyzing the decisions of historical figures and the aftermath of their decisions. Share... How does determining the effect of a historical figures actions help you understand their impact on important events?
