A photogram is a “picture produced with photographic materials, such as light-sensitive paper, but without a camera” An image made by putting objects on a surface, like photographic paper and then exposing it to light which creates a negative shadow image that shows different tones which varies according to the transparency of the objects used. Areas on the paper with no light appear white, those that are transparent appear as grey and the areas with light are dark like a negative. Anna Atkins created a book of the first photograms in 1843 titled British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions with botanical subjects. Procedure: Objects were arranged on a photographic paper, in a darkened room, and the paper was exposed with artificial light. Then the paper was washed and dried.

Susan Derges - Born 1955 Susan Derges is one of the most popular artists who works with Photograms. She explores early photographic techniques of camera-less photography which exposes images right onto photographic paper. Born in London 1955 Studied Chelsea College of Art and Design She lived and worked in Japan from 1981 when she first began experimenting with camera-less photography Received many art awards Her images take on a beautiful, metaphorical dimension Susan continues to develop and refine her Photogram processes today.

Process of Photograms Set up the light source so that it covers an area bigger than the paper you are going to use. With the lights out and the safelight on, at a safe distance, arrange your objects on the paper. Make a test strip Switch the enlarger on and expose for the time determined by the test strip. As a guide ten seconds should be long enough with the lens set at f/8. Carefully take the objects off the paper and place the paper in the developer, then stop bath, then fix (see test strip article for times).  Wash and dry - success your first photogram! Ideally this should have clean white silhouettes against a rich black background.
