Make sure you can see the projector.

2 What does the word PHOTOGRAPHY mean?

3 PHOTOGRAPHY = WRITING WITH LIGHT

4 Camera-less Photography
An introduction to the PHOTOGRAM process & its history…

5 Photogram Unit Learning Targets
I will demonstrate my understanding of the basic photographic process, equipment and chemicals by developing a positive and negative photogram. I will synthesize my understanding of the elements and principles in my photogram composition, which will include a strong focal point, movement and theme.

6 What is a Photogram?

7 What is a Photogram? A PHOTOGRAM is a photographic print made by placing objects onto light-sensitive paper and exposing it with light from above (without the use of a camera).

8 What is a Photogram? Also known as RAYOGRAM after photographer MAN RAY who claims to have discovered the process.

9 How does a photogram work?
Light source Objects Light sensitive paper Variety of tones created by areas partly exposed to light Solid shadow created by object flush to paper

10 How does a photogram work?
Result: Negative shadow image that shows variations in value or tone that depends upon the transparency of the objects used. Areas of the paper that have received no light appear white; those exposed through transparent or semi-transparent objects appear grey.

11 HENRY FOX TALBOT In the 1830s, HENRY FOX TALBOT, a pioneer of photography, started making photograms of plants, which he referred to as ‘PHOTOGENIC DRAWINGS’.

12 ANNA ATKINS ANNA ATKINS was the first woman photographer.
She became interested in making accurate drawings of plant life, and used photography and the cyanotype process as her tools.

13 Photogram Artists Most PHOTOGRAMS made in the 1800s were documentary experiments. It wasn’t until the MODERNIST MOVEMENT in the 20th Century that artists started to make photograms as art works focusing on form, movement and space. Many of these artists were part of the BAUHAUS MOVEMENT in Germany. Lotte Jacobi Christian Shad

14 Man Ray

15 Laszlo Moholy Nagy

16 Both MAN RAY and MOHOLY - NAGY brought photograms from the scientific to the realm of art.
They often used 3-dimensional objects to see how they would translate onto a 2-dimensional photo (light) sensitive surface. They used an artificial light source and sometimes moved the light and the objects around during exposure .

25 Positive Photogram = empty space is white And objects are black and grey Negative Photogram = Empty space is black and objects are white and grey.

26 Photogram Assignment Apply your knowledge of the elements and principles of design by creating a dynamic composition out of objects of varying transparencies. Successfully print 1 negative & 1 positive photogram in the darkroom. Both images must contain a true black, pure white and a full range of greys.

27 HOMEWORK Bring in AT LEAST 15 objects from home.
Objects should vary in: Size Transparency Texture

28 DO NOT BRING IN Expensive jewelry Phones iPods Liquids
