Presentation transcript:

Making Progress in Multiplication Multiplication by 6 Part 2 of the lesson

An alternative representation of multiplication 6 × ( ) = 36 This type of variation on the representation of the six times table has the potential to develop fluency in applying multiplication facts.

Giving explanations Giving explanations is a key component in developing depth and mastery. The Chinese teachers place emphasis on precise explanations, using correct mathematical vocabulary and speaking in full sentences. Notice how the teacher explains that this was a challenge for some children, including higher attaining children.

True or false? This type of activity is common in Shanghai classrooms. The aim is that children should not just check whether the answer is correct by calculating; but instead reason from the structure and relationships within the mathematics. Notice how some children reason that 6 × 4 = 23 cannot be correct since 23 is an odd number.

True or False 6 ×3 = 19 2 × 6 = 12 4 × 6 = 23 6 × 6 = 36 Notice how the children engage in paired discussion regarding whether these number sentences are true or false. Paired discussion is common throughout the lesson: consider its value.

Demonstrating understanding in a variety of ways Demonstration of understanding in a variety of ways is a key feature of teaching for mastery. Observe the different ways that children demonstrate developing understanding throughout the lesson.
