About Web3d Consortium Non-profit, vendor-neutral trade association. Functions as a unique mechanism for collective action by the Web3D community. To provide a forum for the creation of open standards for Web3D specifications. Web3D applications have been actively pursued by many organizations for quite some time. Has spearheaded the development of the VRML 1.0 and 2.0 specifications. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

Working Groups The Web3D Consortium maintains mailing lists for general Web3D Issues and specific Working Groups which collaborate openly on developing Web3D Recommended Practices, standards, and technologies. They are grouped according to their current operating status (Research, Drafting, or Proposal). Working groups produce pulse checks every six months. Next are the list of the currently recognized Working Groups. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

X3D X3D (Extensible 3D) Specification Work Group Info : The X3D working group has created the foundation for the X3D initiative by defining the X3D Core specification and by continuing to define, implement and promote the XML bindings for X3D. Goal : To design and implement the next-generation Extensible 3D (X3D) Graphics specification. To express the geometry and behavior capabilities of the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML 97) using the Extensible Markup Language (XML). 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

VRML-IPR Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Work Group Info : To survey standards-related IPR and source licensing issues and recommend policies to the VRML Consortium. Goals : Survey and summarize intellectual property rights issues concerning standards-based software and licensing schemes: - build list of online references and FAQ - develop discussion draft licenses Make appropriate recommendations consistent with existing VRMLC IPR for: - working group software products - sample implementations 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

SOURCE Source Code Management Work Group Info : Goal: This task group is developing public source browsers that the community can call its own. Goal: To manage and develop the source code maintained by the Web3D Consortium. This currently includes the blaxxun Contact source code (VRML browser) as well as the XJ3D loader (VRML & X3D browser) under CVS. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

Web3D-Mpeg Web3d-Mpeg Work Group Info : Goal : Web3D-MPEG is a new Web3D Consortium Working Group established specifically to advance the ongoing convergence of Web3D and MPEG standards. Goal : To continue the relationship between The Web3D Consortium and the Motion Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) and pursue the interoperability and convergence of standards. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

RM3D Web3D Rich Media Working Group Work Group Info : The Rich Media 3D Working Group is organized by the Web3D Consortium to develop a standard to describe multimedia content in the context of a 3D presentation engine. The standard is both to inform and be interoperable with other standards in this space, such as VRML200x and MPEG-4. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

VRML-CONF Conformance Work Group Info : The vrml-conf working group has been merged with the vrml-cfwg working group. Goal : To provide a forum where conformance testing issues can be discussed. In particular, this group will identify areas where implementations are diverging, and determine appropriate courses of action. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

Content Content Development Work Group Info : Goals : To support VRML content development and VRML content developers. Goals : To develop and maintain resources for content developers. This includes the VRML Repository, VRML FAQ, the VRML Archive Network (VAN), and other related Web3D resources; To provide an interface mechanism for other working groups to solicit comments for their own needs from content developers. To determine recommendations for undergraduate and graduate courses that teach VRML content creation. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

DIS-JAVA-VRML Distributed Interactive Simulation Work Group Info : Establish initial networking conventions for building multicast-capable large-scale virtual environments (LSVEs). Goals Complete a freely available reference Java implementation of the DIS protocol Produce a set of recommended practices for mapping between DIS and VRML worlds Assorted DIS utilities: record/playback, AWT DIS viewers, etc. Math libraries and physics libraries 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

GeoVRML Work Group Info : To develop tools and recommended practice for the representation of  geographical data in VRML. Goals To discuss means for representing geo-referenced data in VRML To develop tools and recommended practice for the representation of geographical data using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

H-ANIM Humanoid Animation Work Group Info : VRML Consortium Charter for Humanoid Animation Working Group Goals to specify a way of defining interchangeable humanoids and animations in standard VRML 2.0 without extensions. to allow people to author humanoids and animations independently 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

VRML-EAI External Authoring Interface Work Group Info : The mission of the EAI Working Group to propose a conceptual model for the interface between VRML worlds and an external environment, as well as bindings for the realization of that interface for one or more environments. Goal To create a standard interface between a VRML world and an external environment. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

KB Input User Input Work Group Info : to implement extension nodes to allow VRML World creators to have access to hardware devices which supply data concerning the physical actions of the end user. Goals to propose one or more nodes that allow content creators to get access to input devices to encourage several browser implementers to implement these nodes to have the VRML Consortium accept the extensions as Recommended Practice to have them accepted as part of some future revision of the core VRML 2.0 specification. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

MEDIA Universal Media Work Group Info: increases the realism of online Web3D worlds (VRML, Java 3D, and other online 3D technologies) and decreases network downloads by defining a small, cross-platform library of locally resident media elements Goals defining cross-platform media libraries comprised of textures, sounds and 3D objects that reside on the client 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

VRTP Virtual Reality Transfer Protocol Work Group Info : to provide client, server, multicast streaming & network-monitoring capabilities in support of internetworked 3D graphics and large-scale virtual environments (LSVEs). Goals to maximize the network abilities of shared 3D worlds to keep pace with the subsequent explosion of network demand by large-scale interconnected 3D virtual environments. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

VRML-Streams VRML Streaming Work Group Info: to define a standard protocol for the streaming of arbitrary data into a VRML 2.0 environment. Goals To deliver a clear definition of the problem set to be solved, possible forming other working groups To deliver a conceptual design describing the architecture of VS and how it interfaces to the VRML scene graph To deliver a final specification of the standards and how they interface to the VRML 2.0 scene graph. This result could either be included in a future version of the VRML specification or as an informative annex to the current specification. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium

ENTERPRISE Enterprise Technology Working Group Work Group Info : The Enterprise Technology Working Group intends to investigate and research existing and emerging technologies that apply to all these problem spaces, proposing Recommended Practices and Standards where appropriate Goals deliver specifications for the integration of XML and CORBA technology into VRML. 1/17/2019 web3d Consortium
