CCE Week 5 Agendas

Agenda for September 24, 2018 Finish “This I Believe” Presentations Begin Lesson #1 on Digital Citizenship Keep all your Digital Citizenship pieces together--you will turn them in together at the end of our studies on this topic. Determine our Digital Footprint

What is a “digital footprint”? all of the information that can be found online, posted by you or by others.

Determine your digital footprint! On your handout: Write down everywhere you have an online presence, specifically online accounts like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Google, Youtube, etc. Don’t forget accounts like Dropbox or iCloud, video game discussion boards, or other cloud accounts. (Also, make a note if you have multiple accounts.)

Video Reflection and Advice Watch Khalid Abbas’ video about determining his digital footprint and, on the back of your handout, take notes on things that stand out to you. 2. What are your thoughts about his story? Write them down on the back of your handout.

Group Discussion and Share Out Together as a group, discuss the following questions. Choose a scribe to write down the group’s responses as you go, and be prepared to share out with the whole class what came up in your group discussion. #1: Have you seen any posting or picture on a “friend’s” Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, etc. that you think is unwise to post? Without names, explain what and why it was unwise.

Group Discussion and Share Out #2: Have you ever posted anything you later took down because it did or might get someone upset or you in trouble? Did you take it down because you thought to or you were told to?

Group Discussion and Share Out #3: Which is worse: posting something mean about someone, posting a too sexy picture or posting party pictures?

Group Discussion and Share Out #4: Do kids KNOW they shouldn’t and post anyway? Why? Or do they NOT know?

Group Discussion and Share Out #5: Discuss the qualities needed for a positive digital footprint. What kinds of posts are helpful/positive to your college and job applications process?

Agenda for Wednesday, September 26th Read and Discuss Oregonian Article Review Important Issues with Digital Footprint Watch and take notes on TED Talk Begin conversations about Online Ethics, Online Cruelty and Cyberbullying

Read Oregonian Article As we read the article: Make notes and keep a running list of problems encountered from postings on social media. After we read: Compare notes with your table partner.

ONLINE FOOTPRINT TIPS: 1. Think twice before you post or text: Before you press the "send" button, imagine the last person in the world that you would want seeing what you're about to share. Remember that everything you post or text can be saved, copied, and sent far and wide. 2. Ditch the drama: When rumors and fights start online, there's a clear record of who got involved and when. It's also not worth the chance that you and your friends will end up feeling upset. Take the high road, and find positive ways to support those who are being teased or harassed. 3. Give and get credit: We all have a responsibility to respect one another's creative work, especially online. Illegal downloading, digital cheating, and cutting and pasting other people's stuff may be easy, but that doesn't make those activities right. 4. Nothing is as private as you think: Check out the privacy policies on sites and apps you use most, then change your account settings accordingly. Never share your passwords or private information online. 5. Make this a world you want to live in: Spread the good stuff, and contribute to your online world in positive ways!

TED Talk by Bailey Parnell: Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health? Take notes and be ready to answer questions on your handout.

What are ways that people connect and communicate with each other through digital media?

What are some of the ways that online relationships are different than offline relationships?

What does it mean to act ethically? How would an ethical person act? An ethical person is thought to treat others with respect, care, and dignity. Someone who is unethical treats others unfairly, unjustly, and irresponsibly.

online ethics: a set of principles and morals governing people’s behavior as it relates to the Internet and digital devices digital citizenship: a safe, responsible, and ethical approach to functioning in the digital world online cruelty, also referred to as cyberbullying: takes place whenever someone uses digital media tools such as the Internet and cell phones to deliberately upset or harass someone else, often repeatedly.
