Definition “an easy to read, often single page, real-time user interface, showing a graphical presentation of the current status (snapshot) and historical trends of an organization’s key performance indicators to enable instantaneous and informed decisions to be made at a glance.” Source: Wikipedia

Let’s boil that down… easy to read presentation current status and trends key performance indicators

Step 1 – Identify Audience Who will use the dashboard? How will they use it?

Step 2 - Identify KPI’s Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Measure of something that indicates success Determine what is important Displayed as number, chart, or gauge How can it be grouped? Is it appropriate to display trend

SMART KPI’s Specific – focused expectations Measurable – quantitative, target Achievable – data is available Relevant – important to the audience Time – predefined period

Step 3 – Identify Visuals What visualization best represents your KPI? Consider Time Phase Point in Time vs. Historical Consider Grouping No groups, few groups, many groups

Suggested Visuals Point in Time - No Grouping Single Value, Gauge Point in Time - Groups Under 5 Text Grid, Bar Graph, Pie Chart Point in Time - Groups 5 - 20 Text Grid, Bar Graph Historical Data - No Grouping Line Chart, Area Chart, Directional Indicator Historical Data - Groups Under 5 Line Chart, Area Chart

Step 4 - Build Identify or create queries to retrieve the KPI’s Create the visual elements Place items on dashboard in an organized fashion

Tips Do not try to include too much information Do not get caught up in visuals Do select KPI’s that will indicate success to the intended audience
