Distracted Driver-Involved Crash Trends February 28th, 2018 Prepared by Daniel Knopp, MPP National Study Center for Trauma & EMS

In 2016, the number of fatal crashes and fatalities in distracted driver-involved crashes increased following a downward trend.

Injury crashes and injuries with a distracted driver involved saw a similar upwards trend, though not as sharp as fatal crashes. Injury Crashes: Injury Severity of KABCO 2-4

The number of fatalities in distracted driver-involved crashes is over 20% higher in 2016, compared to the average of 2013-2015.

Even when accounting for traffic volume, this increase is just over 15%.

Here are the top 10 jurisdictions, ordered by the increase in distracted driver- involved injury and fatal crashes (from 2015-2016) Differences in Distracted Driver-Involved Injury and Fatal Crashes (Combined): 2016 vs. 2015 Jurisdiction Difference 2016 vs. 2015 Pct Change 2016 vs. 2015 Prince George's 528 18.1% Baltimore City 316 21.6% Montgomery 285 10.4% Baltimore 277 11.2% Anne Arundel 183 11.8% Frederick 135 20.3% Howard 89 17.3% Harford 84 14.5% Charles 83 15.5% St. Mary’s 77 21.4% Injury and Fatal Crashes: Injury severity of KABCO 2-5

From 2012-2016, drivers aged 21-34 were involved in more distracted driving crashes than any other age group. They remain the most involved in 2016. However since 2014, drivers aged 35 and older have become increasingly involved in distracted driving crashes. During the same recent time period, the proportion of distracted driving crashes involving drivers younger than age 35 has declined. *An average of 6,938 drivers per year were removed due to unknown age. In total, 34,960 drivers were removed from 2012-2016.
