Lesson 1: Introduction to Binary DATA REPRESENTATION Lesson 1: Introduction to Binary YEAR 7 @ MIDHURST ROTHER COLLEGE

DATA REPRESENTATION In this topic you will... LEARN about binary. RESEARCH why computers use binary. UNDERSTAND how to convert numbers to binary and hex. EXPLORE how text can be converted to binary. UNDERSTAND how images and sound can be converted into binary. So that you can… CREATE an OneNote guide about data representation.

Create a OneNote New Topic - ‘Data Representation’ New Page - ‘Introduction to Binary’ You will create a OneNote to show your work for this topic. This will include what you find out from research tasks and copies of tasks you complete in lessons. You need to start getting into the good habit of explaining how you complete tasks and referencing where you found information you use.

WHAT IS BINARY? In pairs, use the internet to search ‘binary computing’. Find out what is binary. Add what you find to your OneNote in your own words. NEED HELP? Use the links provided to you in the OneNote shared space. These will point you in the right direction. EXTENSION: Find out more facts binary. For example, who invented binary and when?

CLASS DISCUSS: BINARY A number system which represents computer processor instructions. A language, made of 1s and 0s, that the computer ‘brain’ understands. What else did you find out?

INPUTS & OUTPUTS Every digital device has inputs and outputs. These inputs need to be converted into binary in order to be processed by the CPU. Once the process is completed it is converted from binary. Can you give examples of inputs or outputs?

WHY BINARY? We regard computers as clever machines, but why can they only understand 1s and 0s? Use the internet to find out why a computer uses binary. Add what you find to your OneNote in your own words. NEED HELP? Use the links provided to you in the OneNote shared space. EXTENSION: Draw an example of a system that has inputs, CPU & Outputs.

PLENARY: CLASS DISCUSS Make sure you have completed both tasks in your OneNote. Hands up if you can give examples of inputs that will need to be converted to binary.
