Setting, Mood, and Imagery Skills Test English I Unit 3 November 2010

Directions: You need 2 sheets of notebook paper. Put your heading on it. Title: Memorable Memories Number your paper 1 – 4. Skip every other line.

Memorable Memories You have experienced many memorable moments in your life – moments you remember for different reasons - some good, some bad, some sad, some funny, etc. In a few words – just a sentence or phrase – you will write down 4 specific memorable moments. Wait for me to tell you what “kind” of memory to write down on your paper. Ready . . .?

Memorable Memories Your most embarrassing moment A memorable birthday or holiday celebration A memorable moment at school Your proudest moment – a time when you were really proud of yourself or someone else was really proud of you

Which memory do you think would make the BEST story? Think about each of the memories you listed. If you had to describe these memories to someone else, which memory would make the BEST story. Choose one by circling it. You are going to write a story about the memory you choose.

The focus for your story . . . Develop a clear setting by describing where you were during this memorable moment. Remember how important setting details are for your reader. (Time & Place) Be descriptive. Demonstrate your ability to use imagery in your writing. Think about and appeal to your reader’s 5 senses as you write your story. Think about the feeling and atmosphere you want to create for your reader – develop a clear mood.

How will your story be graded? Your grade will be determined by how well you demonstrate your understanding of setting, mood, and imagery. Have you created a clear setting? Have you included setting details? Have you incorporated imagery by appealing to the reader’s 5 senses? Have you described your memory so well that I can see what you see, hear what you hear, feel what you feel, etc.? Is the mood of your story clear?
