1 Here Today - Gone Tomorrow!
Journal 14 DO NOW Here Today - Gone Tomorrow! Identify one word commonly used today that will probably NOT be part of our common vocabulary in 50 years. Create a brief argument for how and why this word will fade from common use.

2 Trait #3: Word Choice What is Word Choice?
Class Notes 15 Trait #3: Word Choice What is Word Choice? Word choice isn’t just about the use—or misuse—of words. It is about the use of rich, colorful, precise language that both communicates and inspires the reader.

3 Strong Word Choice Uses…
Exact language: lively verbs and precise nouns Natural language: Making it sound authentic Beautiful language: Choosing colorful words and phrases

4 Show, don’t tell! Adjectives are descriptive
Nouns are specific, not general Striking words and phrases catch the reader's eye, but the language is natural, not overdone.

5 Show, don’t tell! Slang and clichés are used sparingly, if at all.
Clichés: “Running around like a chicken with his head cut off”, “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse” The writing is fresh, appealing, and full of energy.

MASTERY (A) BASIC (C) NOT YET (F) Ideas/ Content My writing is full of the kinds of details that keep the reader’s attention and show what is really important about my topic. This is a piece that ONLY I could write. The reader usually knows what I mean. Some parts will be better when I include more specific details. When someone reads my paper, it’s hard for them to understand what I really mean or what it is all about. Organization I’ve chosen an order that works well and makes the reader want to find out what is coming next. The order of my paper makes sense most of the time. The order of my paper is jumbled and confused. Voice My paper has a lot of personality. It sounds different from the way anyone else writes. What I truly think and feel only shows up sometimes. I haven’t let my true feelings and personality come through yet. Word Choice I picked just the right words for just the right places. The words in my paper get the message across, but don’t capture anyone’s imagination or attention. My reader is often asking, “What did you mean by this?” Sentence Fluency The sentences in my paper are clear and sound good when read aloud. Some sentences are choppy and awkward, but most are clear. This paper is difficult to read aloud, even with practice. Conventions There are very few errors in my paper. It wouldn’t take long to get this ready to be published. A number of bothersome mistakes in my paper need to be cleaned up before I am ready to publish. It would take a first reading to decode, and then a second reading to get the meaning of my paper.
