SEPARATION OF SUBSTANCES
You will need to set up the following before we start notes: -place a small amount of water in the bottom of your cup -draw a dark dot with marker on.
© OUP: To be used solely in purchaser’s school or college A pure substance contains just one type of particle. A mixture contains at least two different.
 Matter is divided into 2 groups: ◦ Pure substances- made of only 1 type of particle ◦ Mixtures - made of at least 2 types of particles.

Presentation transcript:

What is a Mixture? A mixture is combination of different substances, the amount of the parts can vary.

Types of Mixtures Homogeneous – looks the same throughout Heterogeneous – can see the different parts

What is a Solution? Solution – a liquid mixture Solubility – how well something dissolves Solvent – the liquid doing the dissolving (water) Solute – the solid being dissolved (salt)

Separating Mixtures Depending on what the mixture is made of there are several ways to turn it back into the basic parts. 5 ways Filtration Evaporation Magnetism Chromatography Distillation

Examples of Separation Filtration – large particles stay on the filter paper or in the funnel, while small passes through. Evaporation – heating a solution until the solid remains in the dish.

Examples of Separation Magnetism- using a magnet to attract some of the mixture. Chromatography – uses special paper to pull the solvent up and the parts are attracted at different strengths.

Examples of Separation Distillation – the solvent is heated and some of it evaporates into a gas. The gas is collected, cooled and condensed back into a liquid. http://student.dcu.ie/~doughtl2/index.htm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWdu_RVy5_A&feature=related
