Caption A caption is text that is near an illustration. The caption is an author’s comment or explanation of an illustration.

Heading A heading is a title at the top of a paragraph, page, or chapter. A heading helps to organize the text and makes it easier to read.

Key Vocabulary Key Vocabulary is often highlighted, italicized, or presented in boldface print Key Vocabulary are words that are important in understanding the text.

Boldface Print A tomato is a fruit. Boldface print is print that is darker (bolder) than other nearby print.   A tomato is a fruit. An author uses boldface print to call the reader’s attention to certain words.

A chart is a visual representation of information. A chart lists facts/data in an organized way.

A graph is a chart that compares data. Graphs help the reader to see the relationship between 2 or more things using lines, points, etc.

Maps help the reader visualize information about specific locations. A map is a drawing that represents an area or part of an area. Maps help the reader visualize information about specific locations.

Photograph A photograph is a picture taken with a camera. A photograph is an illustration that adds detail to the text.

Diagram A diagram is a labeled drawing. A diagram is a kind of illustration that explains ideas in the text.

Illustration An illustration is any photograph, picture, or diagram. Illustrations make ideas and details in the text clearer for the reader.
