Next Generation Sequencing Data Processing How to use the Virtual Machine (VM) Andreas Gisel Institute for Biomedical Technologies CNR Bari - Italy

Virtual Machine (VM) A virtual machine is a tightly isolated software container that can run its own operating systems and applications as if it were a physical computer. A virtual machine behaves exactly like a physical computer and contains it own virtual (ie, software-based) CPU, RAM hard disk and network interface card (NIC). Benefits In general, VMware virtual machines possess four key characteristics that benefit the user: C ompatibility: Virtual machines are compatible with all standard x86 computer I solation: Virtual machines are isolated from each other as if physically separated E ncapsulation: Virtual machines encapsulate a complete computing environment H ardware independency: Virtual machines run independently of the underlying hardware

Installing the VM Player

Starting the VM

set virtul RAM not bigger than half of your real RAM Starting the VM about 15min.

Starting the VM user: embnet password: embnet2012

Starting the VM Ubuntu Manual short description of the Virtual Machine

Setting up the VM In case you have no connectivity set up a new wired connection adding ONLY a name and save

Setting up the VM Connect your USB stick Connect USB stick unmount from host machine

Setting up the VM Get started for the Tutorial

Setting up the VM Stop the Virtual Machine

THANKS and enjoy your Virtual Machine
