Social Science Course Selection 2017-2018

9th Grade Must select one Academic World History and Geography to 1500 Pre-AP Early Man-Renaissance Early Man to Renaissance Preparation for AP World History 1.0 bump in GPA Student Expectations: 30-60 min homework per week Essays/Short Answer questions - ALOT of writing! Reading comprehension of an AP textbook Major projects Google Classroom will be used to communicate with the students.

10th Grade MUST SELERCT ONE IF ADVANCED STUDIES Academic World History and Geography 1500-Present AP World History Renaissance to Modern Day Agricultural Revolution to Modern Day Material from World History I is reviewed & mastery of that material is essential for the 1st quarter 1.0 bump in GPA Can earn up to 3 college credits based upon AP Score

11th Grade MUST SELECT ONE Academic US History AP US History Dual Enrollment US History Native America to Modern World 1.0 bump in GPA Can earn up to 3 college credits based upon AP Score 0.5 bump in GPA Can receive 6 transferable college credits if you earn at least a C in the class

Dual Enrollment US History Student Expectations Must be able to work independently. DEUS history covers one, 40-page chapter each week. You must construct your own reading notes. There are no worksheets in college. This course requires 1 research paper per quarter 4-5 hours per week of out-of-class to read, research, and study - Strong readers recommended (college level textbook) -Class structure is based upon interactive lectures -You can earn 6 college credits if you earn at least an unweighted “C” for transferable credit from NOVA.

12th GRADE MUST SELECT ONE Academic US Government AP US and Comparative Government Dual Enrollment Study the American Government system Study the governments in China, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, UK and US Can earn up to 6 college credits based upon scores on AP exams 1.0 bump in GPA Can earn 6 transferable college credits if you earn at least a C. 0.5 bump in GPA

AP US & COMPARATIVE GOVERNMENT Can earn up to 6 college credits based upon AP test scores First Semester-US Government Second Semester-Comparative Gov. Countries Studied: China Iran Mexico Nigeria Russia UK Student Expectations: Read texts approx. 40-50 pages per week Chapter Reading Quizzes Unit Tests: Multiple Choice and Free Response Questions Format Formal Writing Assignments: Current Events (quarterly) and 1 research paper (for the entire course)

Dual enrollment US Government Each Marking Period students will be required to write a 5-page public policy paper (4). Testing will comprise of essays and term identification. Students will be required to participate in TWO of the We the People Congressional Simulations. The regional competition is at Woodgrove on December 9, 2017 and January 26, 2018 is the state competition. Students must maintain a C average or higher to earn college credit. Failure to do so will result in being removed from the class.

AP Psychology Potential to earn 3 college credits based upon AP score 1.0 bump in GPA Student Expectations: Students will be expected to read 20- 30 pages of a college-level textbook to prepare for each class period. Emphasis will be on application of concepts rather than on memorization of definitions.

Dual Enrollment with nova “Survey of African History” 3 college credits We study the history and culture of Africa. We have fun. Lots of guests from the regions of Africa and lots of food. Africa has lots of resources. It is what you should be learning!!
