By the end of the 1800s, Cuba and Puerto Rico remained the only 2 Spanish colonies in the Western Hemisphere

Also by the end of the 1800s, Cuba wanted its independence from Spain Cubans had unsuccessfully rebelled in 1868 and 1895

Cubans were divided on whether they wanted complete independence or annexation by the U.S.

Americans supported Cuban independence for several reasons

The war was fought as the United States and Cuba vs. Spain
