Cell Regeneration & Repair Biology Mrs. Harper 11/9/17

November 10, 2017 Download notes Begin working on Do Now (Have Article Questions out)

Do Now 11/10/17 Which of the four types of cells came first? In what type of environment did these cells live? How many cells are in an adult human body? What is the term for the period of cell growth? What is the term for the period of cell division? Which organelle is found only in animal cells and is involved in cellular division? How do you think wounds heal after an injury?

Cells have the ability to regenerate and repair themselves…. HOW DO THEY DO THIS???

Regeneration & Repair Regenerate- to renew or restore a lost or injured part Repair- to mend or put back in good condition

What is Cell Regeneration? Regeneration- is the process of renewal, restoration, and growth that allows cells to overcome damage New cells are created where old cells were destroyed

Complete vs. Incomplete Regeneration Complete Regeneration- where the new cell tissue is the same as the lost original cell tissue Incomplete Regeneration- cells are only partially or are not completely restored to original form

What is Cell Repair? Repairable- able to be fixed or improved, allows cells to recover from injury Not all cells are repairable, some damage is irreversible

Questions To Consider Can you think of any animals that are able to regenerate their body parts? What body parts are they able to regrow?

Example 1 Deer Can regenerate their antlers

Example 2 Flatworm Can regenerate entire body if cut in half https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L_mJoG4nts

Example 3 Starfish Can regenerate arms and sometimes whole bodies

Example 4 Sharks Continually regenerate new teeth Can have over 24,000 teeth in a lifetime

Example 5 Spiders Can regenerate arms/legs

Example 6 Humans Can regenerate fingernails

Question What are some other parts that humans can regrow or regenerate?

Example 7 Axolotl- aquatic salamander Can regenerate lost limbs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byLDgtSMI0w

Assignment Read the article and answer the questions that follow. Answer the questions in complete sentences. Unfinished questions will be homework I will pass back the tests shortly. I will need to collect the tests at the end, because some people have not taken it.
