Presentation transcript:

The case for better data: Road Safety Aliasgher Janmohammed (Ali) So today I was told to talk about data that is required for RS and therefore, I won’t tell you we have the highest road fatalities in the world, we have double the world fatality rate impacting children and that pedestrians are the victims of our road fatalities

Case for Better Data Why do we need it? Low road safety budget (Bishai et al., 2003) I want to divide my presentation on two parts, firstly I want to talk about why we need good data, then speak about what good data actually is. South African Provinces allocate a small budget to road safety

Case for Better Data Why do we need it? Low road safety budget (Bishai et al., 2003) Prioritise our Interventions, localised interventions Define interventions that work based on low-income area studies and localised problem. High income areas have great pedestrian infrastructure. Source: Google Streets, 2018

Case for Better Data Why do we need it? Low road safety budget (Bishai et al., 2003) Prioritise our Interventions, localised interventions What does good data look like in road safety? It tells us the road user to target. Our data should provide information on who is being killed and how many it is per year. Are we doing better or worse every year? 2020 goal to reduce road injuries by 50% Source: RTMC, 2015-2017

Case for Better Data Why do we need it? Low road safety budget (Bishai et al., 2003) Prioritise our Interventions, localised interventions What does good data look like in road safety? It tells us the road user to target Age group that should be targeted, and the time that impacts our road user Data should tell us what specific age group to target and what time places our people at risk. That way we can provide enforcement at the right time. Data Source: Red Cross War Memorial Hospital, 1991-2016

Case for Better Data Why do we need it? Low road safety budget (Bishai et al., 2003) Prioritise our Interventions, localised interventions What does good data look like in road safety? It tells us the road user to target Age group that should be targeted, and the time that impacts our road user The days when high number of fatalities occur The days that put our children at risk. You can see large fatalities happen during the week but rate is higher during weekend Source: RTMC, 2015-2017

Case for Better Data Why do we need it? Low road safety budget (Bishai et al., 2003) Prioritise our Interventions, localised interventions What does good data look like in road safety? It tells us the road user to target Age group that should be targeted, and the time that impacts our road user The days when high number of fatalities occur Road Injuries information should be available too Serious injuries are as bad as fatalities. When we have data it is completely skewed Source: Pretoria, 2011-2015

Data source: eThekwini (2011-2017) Case for Better Data Why do we need it? Low road safety budget (Bishai et al., 2003) Prioritise our Interventions, localised interventions What does good data look like in road safety? It tells us the road user to target Age group that should be targeted, and the time that impacts our road user The days when high number of fatalities occur Road Injuries information should be available too Geocoded data (I love this one!) Geocoded data tells us where people are killed and then we can find the zones with high number of fatalities. We can basically go there and introduce interventions Data source: eThekwini (2011-2017)

Information provided by Geocoded data is also valuable The geocoded data should also provide additional information.
