Outline The general outline for this presentation is as follows Introduction Literature review Research methodology Data analysis

CHAPTER ONE Background to the problem Important of a teacher/ Responsibities of a teacher The concepts of science The goal of science education The understanding of the subject matter by the teacher

Statement of the Problem Due to the intension initially had in the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, that Government shall promote science and technology, which is contrary to what is happening in the process of teaching and learning of science today The influence of teachers’ academic qualification and experience on students performance

Purpose of the study The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of physics teachers’ qualifications and experiences on students’ performance at the senior secondary school level. Specifically, the study intends to: find out if there is any difference in the performances of the students taught by qualified physics teachers and those taught by unqualified physics teachers. find out if there is any difference in the performance of the students taught by experienced and those taught by less experienced physics teachers. examine if there is any difference between the performance of the students taught by qualified experienced physics teachers and those taught by qualified, less experienced physics teachers. investigate if there is any difference in the performance of those taught by unqualified, but experienced physics teachers and those taught by unqualified less experienced physics teachers.

Research Questions In this study, answer will be provided to the following research questions. Do students taught by qualified teachers perform better than those taught by unqualified physics teachers? Do students taught by experienced physics teachers perform better than those taught by less experienced physics teachers? Do students taught by qualified experienced physics teachers perform better than those taught by qualified but less experienced teachers? Does any difference exist in the performance of those taught by unqualified but experienced physics teachers to those taught by unqualified and less experienced physics teachers?

Research Hypotheses The following research hypotheses would be tested. HO1-There will be no significant difference between the academic performance of physics students taught by qualified physics teachers and their counterparts taught by unqualified physics teachers. HO2-There will be no significant difference between the academic performance of the physics students taught by experienced and less experienced physics teachers. HO3-There will be no significant difference between the academic performance of students taught by qualified experienced physics teachers and qualified but less experienced physics teachers. HO4-There will no significant difference between the academic performance of students taught by unqualified but experienced physics teachers and unqualified less experienced physics teachers.

Scope of the study The study will be limited to qualification and experience of teachers The study will also be limited to Senior Secondary School III (SSSIII) physics students The study will be carried out in some selected local government areas in Oyo State

Significance of The Study The study may be useful in giving an insight into the efficacy of the instructional strategies that could empower the students to learn physics better and consequently enhance greater achievement. The researcher believes that these studies will be of importance to educational sectors, that is, serving as a guide to West African Examination Council (WAEC) on the difficulty they may encounter when setting physics questions. The study may help to ascertain whether teachers academic qualification and experience have influences on student academic performance, and also identifying the nature of the effect. These studies may also be useful to the future researchers who might be interested in this topic or related fields of research

Literature Review Literature has been reviewed under the following sub-headings: Objectives and contents of the senior secondary school physics curriculum; Factors influencing students’ performance at the senior secondary school level; Influence of teachers’ experience on students’ academic performance; Influence of teachers’ qualifications on students’ academic performance; Appraisal of literature reviewed.

Research Type This study will adopt a descriptive research design using questionnaire for data collection from teachers on the relevant variable and questions from WAEC on students’ performance.

Sample and Sampling Technique The target population for this study will be twenty (20) secondary schools offering physics at SSCE level in Oyo State using purposive sampling technique. Twenty (20) teachers of physics will be drawn from those schools, ten of whom are qualified and ten unqualified with random sampling method. Two hundred (200) SSS III physics students will be drawn from these schools. These schools will be spread over Ten (10) local government areas in Oyo state.

Research Instrument Data will be in two sections: The first section would contain teacher’s background such as his or her qualification, years of experience, name and gender. The second instrument will be the physics performance test (PPT) adopted from WAEC. These questions will be administered to students in SSS III physics class for a period of one hour under the supervision of their class teacher, researcher and a research assistant.

Validation of Research Instrument The study will be carried out on two (2) schools that do not participate in these studies. The essence is to show that the content is in order and to confirm if the syllabus coverage has been done to the level the researcher wanted to examine.

Procedure for Data Collection A permission letter will be sought from the principals and the physics’ teachers of the selected schools. The questionnaires will be administered at their convenient time in order to avoid mistakes and any threat that may be detrimental to the research. Services of the research assistant will be employed where necessary.

Data Analysis Techniques The data to be collected for this study would be analysed using a simple descriptive statistical analysis for the purpose of determining the mean score in order to answer the research questions, while t-test statistical analysis would be employed to test the research hypotheses.
