What is the quote sandwich? A way to seamlessly include a quote into a paragraph to serve as proof for your argument. Primarily in the body paragraphs, but really used anytime you quote something. In SPES, it is found in the proof section. Using the quote sandwich will help elevate your writing style.

Structure of a Quote Sandwich

Introduction (top bun) Tells readers that they are about to read a quote. Gives context to the quote. Sometimes tells who is about to say the quote, or what the quote is going to about.

Introductory(top bun) Begins with a “signal phrase” like According to… In __________, it can be seen that… In this quote, ________ Sometimes requires a reporting verb. Also contextualizes the quote, explaining Where in the story the quote is from Which character said or thought it What is happening at that moment

Examples of Signal Phrases and Reporting Verbs According to… In her article… In the opinion of (author’s name)… (Author’s name) suggests that… (Author’s name) argues that… (Author’s name) + (a reporting verb from the right) Acknowledges Agrees Argues Asserts Believes Claims Comments Compares Confirms Declares Denies Disputes Emphasizes Illustrates Implies Refutes Writes

Explanation (bottom bun) This should be an analysis of the quote. Why is this quote important? How does this quote prove your statement or make your point? How does the quote relate back to your thesis? What does this quote reveal? The explanation should be developed, and longer than one sentence. This is the E in your SPES paragraph—it should not only explain the quote, but also link the explanation back to your statement.
