Fractional Power Control Scheme 1>>0 is the PC fraction for MSs with bad channel and MSs with good channel. =0  All MSs transmit at full power: high interference level and poor edge performance. =1  Traditional slow power control: all MSs received at the same power with poor spectral efficiency.  can be adjusted based on e.g. IoT, UL performance etc. of neighbor cells for good edge coverage performance and high spectral efficiency. See contribution C802.16m-08/625

Fractional Power Control Illustration PMAX (PMAX * RMIN) L = Lx-ile Pathloss (L) Mobile Tx Power (Pt) Pathloss CDF 0.5 1 Full power α = 0 α = 0.6 α = 0.7 α = 1 CDF curve (Lx-ile/L)α = RMIN Mobile Tx power for different α`s cell edge users

Performance Evaluation Power Control Scheme Sector Throughput Cell Edge Throughput Mean IoT (dB)  = 0 1.7 Mbps 7 Kbps 19.9  = 0.7 1.4 Mbps 52 Kbps 9.7 Significant reduction of IoT Significant improvement of cell edge throughput Slightly reduction of sector throughput

Effect on Battery Life

Conclusions Fractional power control scheme can be applied for 802.16m UL power control and interference mitigation Significant gains in term of simultaneous cell edge performance and sector throughput over regular and full power schemes. Tightly control of IoT is achievable through fractional power control
