Pathways to Calculus 2000 Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks Overview The development of the frameworks was led by a 7-person team from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) with contributions from several advisory groups as well as grade-span teacher groups, professional educational associations and organizations, individual teachers, administrators, mathematicians, mathematics education faculty, and parents. The 2011 frameworks merged the Common Core State Standards with additional Massachusetts standards. Fifty-nine individuals representing pre-K-12 teaching and learning, business, educational associations and university faculty contributed to their development. In addition 22 DESE and DEEC staff members with expertise in early childhood, test development, mathematics, assessment and other content areas, contributed to the development of the frameworks. The learning standards are organized by two-year grade spans or for single-year courses. The grade spans are PreK–K, 1–2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–8, 9–10, and 11–12. Revised standards for grades 3, 5 and 7 were added in 2004. The Frameworks include grade level standards for pre-kindergarten to grade 8. Each grade identifies a small number of critical mathematical areas and provides a coherent grade-to-grade progression. Grade 8 standards are more rigorous and include some standards covered in the 2000 Algebra I course. High School standards include: High School standards include a traditional and an integrated pathway: Traditional Integrated Algebra I Model Algebra 1 Model Mathematics I Geometry Model Geometry Model Mathematics II Algebra II Model Algebra II Model Mathematics III “Plus” (+) standards indicate additional mathematics that students should learn in order to take advanced courses such as calculus, advanced statistics or discrete mathematics. Pathways to take Calculus in high school Pathways to Calculus 2000 Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks 2011 Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks Pathways to take Calculus in high school DESE provided the following guidance: “if students are to be able to take a calculus course in grade 12, they must usually take Algebra I in grade 8” (page 2 of 2000 Frameworks).   Sample sequence: Detailed pathways to calculus documents are provided on the DESE website and include 3 options: Compacting in Middle School–Students complete standards for grades 6,7,8 and Algebra I by the end of grade 8. Doubling Up in High School–Students take 2 math courses in grade 9 or 10. Enhanced Pathway in High School–Students accelerate in grade 9 and take Enhanced Algebra I, Enhanced Geometry, Enhanced Algebra II.* *Individual districts have also created enhanced pathways using the integrated course sequence.
