Terms used in Multiplication

When you “time” a number you multiply it.

Product The term for the answer when you multiply. Example: The product of 8 x 4 is 32. 8 x 4 = 32

Repeated Addition Is the same as multiplication Example: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 3 x 4 = 12

Factor One of the numbers you multiply by Example: 4 times what factor equals 12? 4 x ______ = 12

Double When you multiply a number by two you are doubling it. Example: double the number 6 6 x 2 = 12

Triple When you multiply a number by three you are tripling it. Example: Triple the number 5 5 x 3 = 15

Symbols X and * both mean multiply Example: 3 x 4 = 12 3 * 4 = 12 3(4) = 12

Repeated Addition Is the same as multiplication Example: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 3 x 4 = 12
