Practical Biochemistry 2 Lab BIOCB2101 IUG, Fall 2017 Dr Tarek Zaida

Office hours: Sat, Mon, Wed: 11-12 Sun: 11-12:30

Course Description This course is the second part of a continuous series of experiments designated for the students whose major is Biochemistry, with the aim to improve their ability in dealing with the soul of biochemistry through some selected experiments.

Course Objective By the end of this course students will be: Ready to explain the different roles of the very important biomolecules in the living system, through understanding the biochemical properties of such compounds. More self-confident in conducting experiments with their own hands. Able to command and handle the different lab equipments with confidence. Familiar with the different methods applied in biochemistry lab.  Students will: gain communication skills Will get used to team work

Experiments Lab 1: Active Acidity, pH, and Buffers Lab 2: Determination of Reducing- and Non- reducing Sugars Lab 3: Determination of Ascorbic Acid Iodometrically Lab 4: Paper Chromatography of Sugars and Amino acids Lab 5: Separation of blood serum lipids by thin-layer chromatography

Lab 6: Quantitative Determination of Protein in Foods by the Biuret Method Lab 7: Quantitative Determination of Protein by the Bradford method Lab 8: Analysis of pigments and oxidation processes in photosynthetic organisms. Lab 9:Energy Metabolism. Lab 10: Isolation of Cholesterol from Egg Yolk Lab 11& 12: Isolation & Purification of LDH from animal tissues.

Textbook PPT presentations of Dr. Tarek Zaida

Evaluation There will be different types of evaluation that will include: Quizzes Writing Lab reports Participation in the actual lab work. Participation in the discussion with classmates through the electronic learning tools.

Course Policy Attendance all lab sessions is a mandatory. Zero tolerance for not following given instructions during lab sessions. Wearing the lab coat as soon as you step in the lab. Acting responsibly during the entire lab session. Team work is a must, including communication with group partners. Giving up reports from the previous lab session must be on the day of the next lab only. Quizzes will be given only electronically on a given previously announced date and time. No make ups are allowed.

After each Lab activity Quizzes 12 On demand Reports 36 After each Lab activity Active Engagement during lab session 20 Throughout the term Pre-lab Quizzes At the end of term Practical exam Total grades 100
