The Integumentary System EQ: How do an organism’s systems interact to carry out life processes?

Who Am I??? I have to be partly dead to keep you alive I come in many colors I am the first line of defense in protecting you from disease I help you maintain homeostasis I am the largest organ of your body I am showing right now Your skin!

Organs/Parts and Functions Your skin, hair and nails make up your integumentary system. The integumentary system is all about protection. Protects from disease Protects from physical damage Protects from dehydration, freezing, and overheating The integumentary system covers your body and helps it maintain homeostasis!

Skin Your skin is your largest organ. It makes up 15% of your total body weight. It comes in many colors The color of skin is determined by a chemical called melanin. More melanin = darker skin.

Functions of Skin Skin protects you by keeping water in your body and foreign particles out of your body. Skin keeps you in touch with the outside world. Nerve endings on your skin let you feel things around you. Skin helps regulate your body temperature. It can sweat to cool you off or surround a layer of fat to keep you warm. Skin helps get rid of wastes.

Two Layers There are two main layers of skin: The epidermis, or the outermost layer of skin. Tough and waterproof, it is only as thick as two sheets of paper. The dermis, or the of skin below the epidermis. Made of a layers of a protein called collagen, it is thick and strong. It contains the sweat glands, nerve fibers, blood vessels, hair follicles, and muscle fibers.

Hair and Nails Hair and nails are an important part of the integumentary system. They are made of living and dead cells. Hair protects the skin from harmful UV rays. Hair also keeps dust particles and insects out of your eyes and nose. Hair also helps you regulate your body temperature. Nails protect the tips of your fingers and toes so that they can be used as sensory tools.
