Modesty the forgotten virtue

Modesty, the Forgotten Virtue u Encouraging modesty has been a perennial task during my lifetime. u 1960s miniskirts u The influence of fashion (swimwear/the bikini) u The popularity of cheerleading/athletics u The rise of feminism and libertarian morals u The general decay of societal expectations u Fewer and fewer churches are holding the line; elders, preachers and Bible class teachers are reluctant to teach the truth.

Modesty, the Forgotten Virtue u Part of the problem in effecting change is our approach to the subject. u Far more passages are pertinent to this subject than just I Timothy 2:9 & I Peter 3:1–5. u This is an issue that concerns both men and women with respect to practice. u Like most things this is a matter of the heart and not the head.

Modesty, the Forgotten Virtue 1.According to the Bible, the primary purpose of clothing is to cover the body. 2.There is nothing right or wrong about particular clothing styles. 3.The Bible tells Christians what style of clothing to wear. 4.Since God looks on the heart, what we wear on our bodies does not matter.

It is legalistic to impose guidelines or standards of dress for Christians. 15. Christians should never wear clothing that is intended to arouse sexual desire.

Modesty, the Forgotten Virtue 16. There are some settings where it is appropriate to wear revealing clothing (the lake, the gymnasium, a wedding). 17. One may be covered from head to toe and still be immodest. 18. One could wear modest clothing and still be an immodest person.

Modesty, the Forgotten Virtue 19. There is nothing a man can do when confronted by an immodest woman except look. 20. Most Christians do not understand the meaning, power or benefits of true modesty.
