Warm-up  List 10 lab safety rules. Do you have the proper heading on your paper? REMEMBER: You will keep this paper ALL week. Put it somewhere you won’t.
I. Making Observations- Observations can be made several different ways. Observations can be put into two different categories; qualitative and quantitative.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD. 15 sec to get in groups of 4 Use whiteboards to write scientific method 10 min Look at other boards, add to your whiteboard if need.
DO NOW What Is Science?? - In your own words, write down any ideas or thoughts to explain what science is all about! -Take out homework if you did not.
Observations Use one or more of the 5 senses Used to note and record facts or data Ex: There is one TV in the room.
Scientific Inquiry.
 Observation is describing an object using your five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, & taste) or measurement (numbers).
The nature of science. Scientific knowledge is the product of observation and inference. Observations and Inferences.
Observations How we look at things in science. What is observation? Observations are made in science. They are made by using: Senses Tools –increase accuracy.
Thinking like a Scientist Part I. Observation Observation: / information collected by using your five senses: see, smell, taste, touch, hear. / Usually.
9/9/14 Objective: What is discovery science? *Take out HW, keep for now Do Now: Write down 3 observations (things that you can actually see that are important.
What is Science? Science – A way of learning about the natural world. Uses observation and logical reasoning. Scientific Inquiry – Refers to the various.
Thinking Like a Scientist Science starts with an observation Observation – the process of gathering information in a careful, orderly way  Use your senses:
Observations Use one or more of your five senses to gather information
\ Observation & Inference. Observations Any information collected with your 5 senses. The skill of describing scientific events Quantitative- Is measureable.
What is Science? Science – A way of learning about the natural world through observation and logical reasoning. Scientific Inquiry – Refers to the various.

Observations = Evidence Write at least the statements in blue

Review: Evidence: data, fact, graphs, observations Inference: logical conclusion or opinion based on evidence **Our claims must always be based on evidence, not just logical ideas.

There are two types of observations: Qualitative Observations: Things you can observe with your senses ex: color, texture, taste, odor Quantitative Observations: Measurements – with numbers ex: height, mass, temperature,

Test your knowledge: Your teacher will give you some cards. Divide your notes vertically into a giant T Your teacher will give you some cards. Sort them into two piles: qualitative observations and quantitative observations. After everyone on your team agrees, write them in your notebook under two headings written on the giant T: Qualitative Quantitative

Now make some SWEET observations… Write under your columns: 2 Quantitative observations 5 Qualitative observations **You may not observe its taste 

Summary Observations are a form of evidence Observations come in two basic types: Qualitative Observations – use senses Quantitative Observations – use numbers
